Amy Sampson

One of Rangefinder magazine’s 30 Rising Stars, Amy is a Devon-based reportage wedding photographer who photographs all over the globe with her observational style.

“My lead into weddings was entirely accidental! I started out in music festival photography and soon couples planning relaxed, festival style weddings started to contact me enthused by my observational style. Unbounded by the pressure of having intentionally marketed myself as a wedding photographer I leaned into the approach of “shoot how you want to shoot” helping me shape my love of reportage style from the off. After that first year, weddings snowballed and I soon became entirely focussed on the industry and feel extremely proud to have had that recognised recently through TIR, TWIA and Rangefinder.

I always seek to authentically capture atmosphere when I am shooting a wedding, adapting to the environment the shots I see evolving are in; whether that involves throwing myself into the day with a mix of friendly guest-like enthusiasm (tequila shots, ok then!), getting down in the mud playing hide and seek with the kids or stealth-ninja-esque deployment of my inner SAS Hero to capture quieter, more intimate and less obvious moments. For me, my secret weapon is being my smiley self, I love to engage with and disarm guests so that they feel comfortable with me around, that allows me to secure the triple A pass that I want into all the authentic moments on a wedding day.

I love seeing the work produced by PKIR so am really looking forward to judging the awards.”

Sonia – S2 Images

Hey, I’m Sonia! I make up half of S2 Images, working alongside my husband of almost 12 years, Simon. We met through photography, so it made sense to setup a business together. We shot our first wedding with each other the weekend after our own, back in 2011. I took a step back from shooting when we had our son. Basically, I now manage Simon.

I started my photography career in fashion at the age of 16. At the end of my degree, I switched to documentary, shocking many. This is when they believed I deserved a first, as I don’t do things in half measures. My final major project was photographing the start of the war in Yemen.

From the work I produced, I managed to do a year long project. This was Arts Council funded, working alongside Birmingham Library and Archives and Midlands Art Centre. This work was exhibited at 2 art galleries in Birmingham and I had a book published as well.

Soon after I chose to focus fully on S2 and I really enjoyed working alongside Simon. It’s our happy place. I’d say our wedding photography style marries up a number of genres within photography, and that’s what I love most about weddings. Capturing the natural moments is most important, but we do personally see value in occasional portraits as well. It feels so rewarding to have a job that means so much to people, especially as the work becomes more poignant as time passes.
